2. Product-directive pyrolysis for production of oil and gas production with high yields
Pyrolysis of volatile-rich solid fuels like coal and oil shale has never realized the simultaneous production of oil and gas with their high yields at temperatures even above 1000 ℃. On the other hand, it is challenging worldwide in obtaining an industrializable technology of coal pyrolysis to produce tar as the major product. Dr. Xu and his team clarified the staged-control mechanism of pyrolysis reactions for directing the formation of tar or/and gas products during pyrolysis. He further innovated the so-called moving bed with internals for pyrolysis of coal and oil shale to ensure the secondary cracking only to heavy species so that the oil yield gradually increased with raising operating temperature. Because of this it has for the first time realized the production of oil and gas with ideally high yields at temperatures above 1000 ℃.
The concept and innovated reactor have been well testified via both laboratory test and a 1000 t/a pilot verification (upside picture). Scale-up of the technology has been performed, and a 200 kt/a demonstration plant is under construction in Shanxi (see two photos), China. The technology has obtained intellectual protection in up to 10 different countries such as USA, Canada, Australia, Russia, Estonia, Mongolia, etc.
